VOID LANCER

A biomechanical shoot 'em up for the Commodore 64

Fly the Void Lancer into a world grown out of flesh, bone and machinery. Inspired by the art of H. R. Giger, VOID LANCER is a brand-new horizontal shooter written from scratch in 6502 assembly for a standard PAL Commodore 64 with a 1541 disk drive.

Ribbed tubes, xenomorph skulls, egg chambers, bone cathedrals and resin hives scroll past in smooth, pixel-by-pixel hardware scrolling while you blast your way through six long stages to six giant bosses.

Features

  • 6 stages, each about two minutes of scrolling, each with its own landscape and its own version of the enemies: veined flesh, ivory bone, cracked fossil stone, intestinal biomass, glossy resin
  • 6 giant bosses built from characters and moved pixel by pixel, each with its own attack patterns and weak points: the Biomech Core, the Ovomorph Mother, the Idol of Bones, the Pilot, the Brain Golem and the Hive Queen
  • Power-up bar: collect capsules and pick what you need — Speed, Missiles, Double shot, Laser, up to two Options, and a frontal force field
  • Fair collisions: hitboxes measured on the real sprite graphics and pixel-accurate terrain — if it hit you, it was really there
  • Original SID soundtrack: 8 tunes (title, three stage themes, boss, stage clear, game over, stage intro) and sound effects, and the music keeps playing while the game loads
  • Procedurally rendered "airbrush" graphics in the spirit of Giger, squeezed into C64 multicolour
  • Full-screen title picture with an open lower border and a wavy sprite scroller, plus an attract-mode demo
  • Extra lives at 30,000 points and every 50,000; after the sixth boss the game loops with a higher difficulty

Under the hood

For the demoscene crowd: an IRQ- and DMA-tolerant 2-bit fastloader with LZ77 decompression streamed straight to the final addresses (with a KERNAL fallback for SD2IEC, 1571 and other devices), double-buffered hardware scrolling with character parallax, a split between the HUD and the playfield, a 32-sprite multiplexer, giant bosses moved through XSCROLL/YSCROLL with their next position pre-rendered in the hidden buffer, and PETSCII directory art.

How to play

Download the .d64 disk image and run it on a real Commodore 64 with a 1541 drive, or in an emulator such as VICE (File → Smart attach / Autostart). The game is designed for PAL machines.

LOAD"*",8,1 RUN

The fastloader is used on a 1541 (or with true drive emulation in VICE); on other devices the game falls back to the KERNAL loader.

Controls

Move Joystick in port 2 (port 1 also works)
Fire Fire button (hold for autofire)
Activate the selected power-up SPACE/Second joystick button
Pause RUN/STOP

Hi, nice game. Fun and enjoyable. What are you using to program it? Directly in assembly, or are you using a tool?

Thanks, glad you're enjoying it! It's written directly in 6502 assembly, assembled on a PC with the ACME cross-assembler. Around the code there's a set of Python tools I built for the project to generate graphics and more.  Everything is tested in the VICE emulator.

It’s not Katakis, mind you, but it’s still nice. :-)

I think Katakis is one of the absolute high points of shoot ’em ups on the C64. I’m working on this completely on my own, without Rainbow Arts behind me ;)
If I had managed to make it that good, I probably would have priced it at a minimum of €10 :D

Thanks anyway, I really appreciate your kind words!

An excellent shoot 'em up. I included it in a video alongside other games released in September.

Thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed the game, and I truly appreciate you including VOID LANCER in your September releases video. Thanks for the support! 😀

I am very interested, but the game is not free or "Name your own price". It is 3.99 EUR. I am ok for paying 3.99€ or any amount you decide on,  but currently this is misleading.

Thank you for your interest, and I’m sorry for any confusion. The full version of the game has a minimum price of €3.99, while the demo can be downloaded and played for free. Of course, you can choose to pay more if you wish. This way, you can try the game first and decide whether you’d like to purchase the full version.

Awesome!

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Nice game! Runs well in NTSC.

Thanks!

Looks really interesting!

It is 😉

Very nice game!

Thanks a lot!

Hi

Could You add 2nd fire button support (as SPACE)?

I’ll work on it, I promise! 😀

Hi! I’ve added support for the second joystick button and made a few improvements for those using the C64 Ultimate or MEGA65. Let me know if everything works fine ;)

The first proper shmup for the C64 in quite a while, so I made a longplay of it. A few slowdowns with all the power-ups, but I don’t care. Nice work!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to make a longplay of the game, and I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😀 Also, great playing! I honestly thought I had made the game quite difficult! ;D

I think the difficulty level is spot on! Don't let the video fool you, though, since it's a tool-assisted longplay (as mentioned at the end of the video description), made to quickly produce a longplay for YT.

I’ll definitely give it a try on my MEGA65 without any assistance, since I’m a fan of good shmups.

Ah, now I understand! 😄 I hadn’t read the full text in the YouTube description, so I completely missed that it was a tool-assisted longplay. That makes a lot more sense now! Thanks again for the video, and I’d be really curious to know how you find the difficulty when you try it on your MEGA65 without assistance. 😀

Hi! I’ve added a few improvements for the MEGA65, including stereo SID support and saved high scores. Download the new file and let me know if everything works fine ;)

I tested the new version on MEGA65's C64 Core with REU and a second SID, and it works flawlessly. I noticed that when I swapped the joystick port (to Port 1), the SPACE key no longer works. So I would suggest keeping it Port 2-only, as with the vast majority of C64 games. I don’t own a controller with two buttons.

Yes, it's quite a different experience when playing without save states. So far, I've only made it as far as the boss in Stage 3. One suggestion regarding the game balance: I think it's fine to lose the weapon power-ups when you lose a life, but it would be nice if the speed upgrade only went down by one level. However, I'll leave it up to you whether you want to implement that.

Unfortunately, PayPal keeps rejecting my transactions 😳

Can you set up payments using a regular credit card?

(+1)

Hi, thank you for your interest in the game. I’ve just added Stripe as an option for credit card payments as well. I look forward to hearing your feedback on the game.

Best, Diego

Bought 😉

I'll record a video for my channel in a few days and send you the link 😉

Thank you so much! 😉 I really appreciate your support. I’m looking forward to seeing your video and hearing what you think of the game. Please send me the link when it’s ready! 😀
